What to Expect After Outpatient Surgery

Here are our typical post-op orders for reference only:

Lumpectomy or Excision of Breast Lump

  • discharge to home when recovered from anesthesia

  • wear snug bra day and night until follow up, with additional padding or gauze over surgical site for added compression.

  • Remove bra and gauze as needed to wash or replace and to shower.

  • May shower over surgical incisions starting tomorrow. Wash gently with soap and water, pat dry.

  • Do not apply lotions directly on incision until after follow up, but ok to use deodorant/antiperspirant.

  • Apply cool pack off and on as tolerated to surgical site in first 48 hours.

Lymph Node Biopsy

  • discharge to home when recovered from anesthesia.

  • apply a small pillow or a rolled towel into armpit while arm is at rest to put compression on the lymph node biopsy site. Do this as often as possible to prevent swelling of the site.

  • May shower over surgical incisions starting tomorrow. Wash gently with soap and water, pat dry. This is especially important with an incision at the armpit.

  • Do not apply lotions directly on incision until after follow up, but ok to use deodorant/antiperspirant.

  • Apply cool pack off and on as tolerated to surgical site in first 48 hours.

Port Placement

  • discharge to home when recovered from anesthesia.

  • Apply cool pack off and on as tolerated to surgical site in first 48 hours.

  • May shower over surgical incisions starting tomorrow. Wash gently with soap and water, pat dry.

  • Port is ready to use anytime.

  • May use EMLA cream before needle sticks as directed by oncologist.

Post-Op Medications

  • resume regular home medications

  • Percocet 5/325, 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed for pain.

  • Phenergan 25 mg by mouth every 6 hours as needed for nausea.

  • Ibuprofen 600 mg by mouth every 8 hours for pain. May alternate with Percocet.

Cautions

  • Call MD if fever >101, expanding redness around incision, or drainage from incision.

  • Follow up with surgeon in 1-2 weeks. Call 797-1941 for appointment if you do not already have one scheduled.
