Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic receives a grant from Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

The Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic is a recent recipient of a grant from the Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for 2012-2013 in the amount of $33,943.50. The program goal, “All Woman are Worthy of Care-Breast Health Initiative,” is to use nurse case management to improve breast health for the patients served by the clinic to assure screening mammograms for 200 women by utilizing community resources as well as a collaborative effort to ensure diagnostic follow up of abnormal mammograms at no charge to the patients.

Dr. Jennifer Beatty of The Breast Place has served as a volunteer physician with the clinic since 2011 by reviewing abnormal breast reports and recommending a plan of care. Dr. Beatty also provides follow up breast exams and procedures at no charge to the patient, which allows the clinic to provide the comprehensive care a woman facing a breast health issue who does not have a healthcare payer source. States Wanda Lefler-Weart of the Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic, “The staff at the Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic is excited about this grant and we are most appreciative of Dr. Beatty’s contributions to women and their families. It does take all of us to demonstrate that all women are worthy of care. Dr. Beatty not only understands the concept but practices it.”

The Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic’s mission to understand and serve the health and wellness needs of the medically underserved and their households, who live or work on Johns, Wadmalaw or James Islands.
